What is Steampunk fashion?

Steampunk fashion is considered to be a sub-movement of the steampunk genre, and generally involves various hairstyles, make-up, accessories, and sometimes even body modification. Steampunk is something that’s been around for decades before the term was even coined. According to author and blogger G. D. Falken, steampunk is quite simply Victorian-era science fiction. It’s conceptualizing the future from a romanticized Victorian perspective.

You’ll also see a steampunk fashion and accessories on TV in shows like ”Dr. Who” and ”Warehouse 13” to costume and set designs for Broadway shows like ”Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” ”Wicked” and ”Newsies.”

The pop culture hits have inspired cosplay enthusiasts to sport steampunk fashion, and have given rise to a number of social groups and gatherings for conventions, balls and other events. This growing interest also created a whole cottage industry of makers and tinkerers — from at-home hobbyists and weekend warriors to professional craftsmen and women.
